Love Songs is the book which compiles all of the words to all of the songs by Crass. Originally published by Pomona in 2004 as a paperback, and out of print for a couple of years, we felt it was time for a resurrection. Love Songs seems a fitting endpoint to the Crassical Collection – the remastered and expanded CDs of Crass’ studio albums.
Love Songs may seem to some an ironic title for the words of Crass, who are often dismissed as “angry shouty noise” by those Continue reading
Now available for pre-order in our lovely shop is the utterly devine session recently laid down for Latitudes by Chelsea Wolfe and band. And what a supremely charming bunch of people they were to have as guests.
Chelsea and her band brought a unique personal take to the songs of the one and only Rudimentary Peni for this session, and it’s truly an extraordinary performance that we are delighted to bring to you.
Chelsea Wolfe is one of those artists who presents an environment rather than a show or an album – a tangible world to step into. On first being tipped off to her work, it was the marriage of visuals and Continue reading
Yes that’s right, those legendary space rockers aka Bardo Pond have joined the Latitudes ranks. The psychedelic journey of the Pond all began by two brothers, Michael & John Gibbons, sharing their interest in free-form noise, spreading the enthusiasm to an array of instrumentalists and vocalists. Their sound snowballed taking in musical roots from the realm of jazz and blues structures, not to mention New York’s No Wave movement championed by the likes of James Chance and the Contortions as well as the downtown Knitting Factory scenes. Now after eight acclaimed full-length albums, the band that often dabbles in an eclectic range of side projects have regrouped for another stormer in our very own Southern Studios.
The resulting session, Yntra, is a brilliant distillation of what the band do best into just three epic tracks. From the elaboration of the densest, textural landscapes to moments of pure, ecstatic clarity the sound is still incredibly thick with their battery of guitars and unrelenting Continue reading
It’s a delight and simultaneous feeling of liberation to finally announce the release of Crass’ Christ, The Album LP reissue, which is now available for pre-order on the Southern web shop.
Released in 1982 with unplanned irony as the Falklands War raged on, Christ, The Album, another double vinyl half-studio/half-live release, once again aimed to take no prisoners. It’s controversial and boundary pushing style has been at the crux of critic and fan discussions for the years that followed, but admittedly received unquestionable respect and admiration. Harry Sword phrases it best: “Christ, The Album is too good for the TV punk documentaries, that’s why it’s still relevant and dangerous now.” Read his thoughts as the album marks it’s 30th year in the sonic ether.
“By 1981 Crass had been in existence for four tempestuous years. In that time we’d encouraged punk to grow from being no more than just another ‘great rock’n'roll swindle’ into a genuine movement for change. Anarchy had been rescued from the dusty libraries of academia and the equally dusty dreams of barstool bullshitters to become the catchword for a whole new generation of streetwise activists.” – Penny Rimbaud
Cut to new lacquers at Abbey Road studios from the untouched original analogue vinyl master, this double LP comes with the original book (“A Series Of Shock Slogans And Mindless Token Tantrums”), original poster and the addition of a download card giving you free access to an mp3 download of the album. All of the original tracks remain intact, including recording of their 1981 summer gig at the 100 Club in London, as well as other studio tracks, demos, radio broadcasts and cassette recordings, leaving no Crass gem unturned.
Available to pre-order from the Southern web shop now.
