New Album from EARTH – Available to Pre-order Now!

Our mail order elves are very excited about the forthcoming double vinyl version of Earth’s new album Angels Of Darkness, Demons of Light 1. We got the CD version a few weeks ago and our elves have been listening to it non-stop while packing orders, playing tetris with all of the lovely stock in the mailorder cave room and sending our customers nice e-mails. What got them even more excited was when we heard we’d be getting a very limited number on lovely, green vinyl.

Earth – Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light 1

5 tracks, 60 minutes. Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light 1 is the first new studio album from Earth since 2008′s Bees Made Honey In The Lion’s Skull. The introduction of cello (Lori Goldston) on this record brings a more fluid and textured sound, while still remaining heavy. Line up for Angels of Darkness… is: Dylan R Carlson – electric guitar & devices; Adrienne Davies – percussion; Lori Goldston (Nirvana, David Byrne, Black Cat Orchestra, Laura Veirs) – cello; Karl Blau (Laura Veirs, Microphone) – bass. Recorded at Avast Studios and produced by Stuart Hallerman (Soundgarden, Mudhoney, Built To Spill, Earth2).  Released on CD and double vinyl.

Following the Extra Capsular reissues, Earth’s next offering is a brand new studio album, Angels Of Darkness, Demons of Light 1, a fine testament to the fact that they have come a long way since 1989.  Drawing on inspiration from both British Folk-Rock bands the Pentangle and Fairport Convention and the North African Tuareg band Tinariwen, the new material, while still ‘heavy’ is much more fluid and melodically oriented, less dense and more textured and nuanced. It contains greater improvisatory interplay between the musicians.

The new album acknowledges previous recordings, sonically it cultivates the jazz infused Americana presented on The Bees Made Honey In The Lion’s Skull and as a further nod to the past, Earth returned to Avast studios to work with producer Stuart Hallerman (Soundgarden, Mudhoney, Built To Spill, and Earth2!) again. There have been some significant changes which have given birth to yet another new sound, the main change being the line up and so joining Dylan and Adrienne on the album is cellist Lori Goldston (Nirvana, David Byrne, Black Cat Orchestra, Laura Veirs) and Karl Blau (K Records, Laura Veirs, Microphones) on electric bass. The touring band will feature Dylan Carlson, Adreinne Davies, Lori Goldston, and Angelina Baldoz on bass.

There are many breaths of fresh air in this new record, many hopeful tones and drones as well as more eerie ones. One thing is for sure, this incarnation of Earth excels all expectations.

Starring super-notorious muscle-bound punk/metal dudes Glenn Danzig and Henry Rollins (with a little help from super-notorious soft-rock dudes Hall and Oates) Henry & Glenn Forever is a love story to end all love stories! The premise of this Cantankerous Titles-released comic is explained at the front of the zine: “Henry and Glenn are very good ‘friends.’ They are also ‘room mates.’ Daryl and John live next door. They are satanists.” What follows is ultra-metal violence and cryfest diary entries, cringing self-doubt and mega-hilarious emo-meltdowns. Who knew Danzig was such a vulnerable, self-conscious sweety-pie? Who knew Rollins was such a caring spouse? Who knew Hall and Oates were so infernally evil—yet so considerate? Well, illustrating/writing team Igloo Tornado (featuring super-awesome comixdude Tom Neely) did and they kicked down 64 fully-illustrated pages with it. Genius on all fronts. Terrifyingly cute. Cutely terrifying. As the real-life Rollins says, quoted on the back cover, “Has Glenn seen this? Trust me, he would not be impressed.”

Melvins – The Bride Screamed Murder

Melvins return with the third release featuring Buzz Osborne, Dale Crover and Big Business’ Coady Willis and Jared Warren after recently celebrating their twenty-fifth anniversary. Never ones to follow suit or to become predictable, with their brand new album, The Bride Screamed Murder they keep things interesting and rather than put out an album of wall to wall rock bangers they have changed their tune again and opted for a tight mix of highly entertaining call and response jams and more progressive experimental songs. This is one refreshing album, enjoy.

Mike Patton – Mondo Cane

Mike Patton (Faith No More, Peeping Tom, Tomahawk)  unveils Mondo Cane, his Italian language rock-meets- orchestra hybrid. Recorded at a series of European performances including an outdoor concert in a Northern Italian piazza, this album features traditional Italian pop songs as well as a rendition of Ennio Morricone’s “Deep Down.”   Patton worked with a 30-piece orchestra and choir to create the uniquely new Mondo Cane sound.
Patton’s body of work continues to evolve and grow with a wide range of bands and solo projects including Mr. Bungle, Faith No More, Fantomas, Tomahawk, Peeping Tom and most recently as a film composer and voice actor.

Title Tracks is John David (Georgie James, Q and Not U). Every Little Bit Hurts was recorded in 2008 and is now released through Dischord on limited edition 7 inch.  Only 100 copies available for Europe.
On the Title Tracks debut single, Every Little Bit Hurts, John displays an almost scientific approach to song-writing. Bits and pieces and diverse influences culled from such wells as; a holy-grail-stocked record collection; a moonlighting gig as a radio disc jockey; and more than a decade of touring and recording in the US, Europe and beyond, have all served to hone John’s musical vocabulary into a powerful and engaging instrument.

Basla is supported live and in the studio by a line-up of regular collaborators including Kristin Forbes and Sammy Ponzar, as well as occasional appearances by David Brown, Chris Farrall (Hoover, The Sorts), Clark Sabine (Statehood) and Chad Molter (Medications, Faraquet).

The Aquarium – Performer

The Aquarium is a duo featuring Jason Hutto (Edie Sedgwick, Motor Cycle Wars) on keyboards and vocals and Laura Harris (Benjy Ferree) on drums. Jason’s layering of overdriven electric piano and keyboards creates surprising depth and ample texture for Laura’s  rollicking back-beats.
The Aquarium only plays a handful of shows each year yet have attracted a dedicated following with their hypnotizing instrumentals and frantic vocal compositions.
This limited edition 7 inch is the first release since their 2006 full-length on Dischord. Mixed by Brendan Canty (Fugazi) and produced by Benjy Ferree. Only 100 copies available to Europe.

Land of Kush’s Egyptian Light Orchestra – Monogamy

Monogamy is the second release from Sam Shalabi’s Land of Kush project and the follow up to  Against The Day. Over 21 musicians contribute to the record, many the same Montreal-based improv, experimental players who performed on Against The Day. Released on CD and deluxe 180g double vinyl.
For the Monogamy album, the group has been given it’s own sub-moniker as The Egyptian Light Orchestra. The band is a truly hydra-headed beast on this recording; string, brass and woodwinds careen around the drone/backbeat of the major movements, shifting between short melodic punctuations, free excursions, and consolidated unison lines. Dissonant piano, synth and electronics bubble below, above and at the outer limits of the mix.

Harvestman/Minsk/US Christmas – Hawkwind Triad

The Hawkwind Triad album is a fitting tribute to the British band that somehow seems to be simultaneously unheard by the majority of the world’s rock listeners, while also standing as one of the most influential psychedelic bands of all time.
The Triad is unique; it is an album of covers by three separate artists that essentially flows like an album. Each band – HARVESTMAN (Steve Von Till of NEUROSIS), MINSK, and U.S. CHRISTMAS – has approached these 11 iconic songs with respect, but each have also recognised the need for the songs to be reinterpreted in a new space and time. The result is a full-length psychedelic feast that not only captures the feel of Hawkwind’s individual songs, but also has the feel of their classic albums. Even the artwork by Boston artist Thomas Saraceno appropriately provides trippy surrealist scenes fitting to many albums from the 70′s.

Horseback – The Invisible Mountain

The Invisible Mountain is Horseback’s second full-length album. Released by Aurora Borealis on limited 180g transparent vinyl as an edition of just 300 with a fold over velum-style sleeve featuring artwork by Russian occult artist Denis Kostromitin, this is a beautiful edition of an incredible record.

HORSEBACK, the brainchild of Jenks Miller, has released two full-length albums since forming in 2007.

The Invisible Mountain spans four tracks of gorgeously warm analogue drone rock that brings to mind the Kraut drift of Amon Duul II and the modern Western cinemascope of Earth while pushing headlong into territories  unknown. Miller commented:  “Horseback is an ever-evolving project which will explore a variety of sounds and approaches in its lifetime.”

Conan – Horseback Battle Hammer

CONAN are a Caveman Battle Doom trio from the grim North of England. They summon the heavy riff from the ungodly land and crush the skull of the unbeliever with their low end doom assault.  Waves of sludge and galloping crust passages overwhelm the unwary.
Horseback Battle Hammer is comprised of four long and crushing tracks recorded in mid November 2009 at Wales’  mighty Foel Studio (Hawkwind, Electric Wizard, Blue Cheer, Godflesh, Amon Duul). The sound is monolithic, and clearly the band made the very best use of this legendary studio to get remarkable results from their custom made gear for a truly crushing debut release.  With artwork by Tony Roberts (Electric Wizard, Unearthly Trance, Cathedral), Conan have set in stone the majesty of their arrival.

Menace Ruine – Union of Irreconcilables

This is the fourth full length album from Montreal duo Menace Ruine. Released in a CD digipack with fold out poster insert. The double 180g LP will be limited to only 500 worldwide.
Entitled Union of Irreconcilables, the album builds on their previous great work, the alchemical collision of black metal, walls of noise, mysticism, martial rhythms, and a medieval affinity for  melody leaving the listener with a sense of unforgettable originality.
Begun in 2006, Menace Ruine have always followed their own path, combining unusual elements and vocal styles in an effort to capture their unique musical vision.

Twilight – Monument To Time End

Twilight is a metal supergroup of grimm proportions: N. Imperial (Krieg, N.I.L.) – Vocals, Blake Judd (Nachtmystium) – Lead & rhythm guitars, backing vocals, Wrest (Leviathan) – Drums, bass, lead & rhythm guitars Stavros Giannopolous (Atlas Moth) – Lead & rhythm guitars, Sanford Parker (Minsk, Buried At Sea) – Mini Moog, FX, Aaron Turner (Isis) – Guitars, Effects and Vocals.  Robert Lowe (Lichens, Om) makes a guest appearance on 3 tracks. This is the band’s second full-length recording and the follow up to 2005′s self-titled debut. Monument To Time End was written collaboratively between all six members of the current line up.
Unlike their self-titled debut, the music on Monument To Time End was written collaboratively between the six members of Twilight.

Heavy Breathing is the brutal and infectious debut full-length from Seattle’s Black Breath. Following on the band’s incredible incendiary EP Razor To Oblivion, they travelled to Kurt Ballou’s (Converge, Trap Them, Disfear) God City Studios, to lay down ten brand new tracks. Taking influence from Swedish black metal while still drawing on the raw punk and hardcore sounds, this debut is one of the most anticipated albums on the underground in years. Formed in the winter of 2005, Black Breath made the move from their native Bellingham to stake a claim as Seattle’s heaviest hardcore band. They made the rounds playing tons of shows, four DIY tours up and down the West Coast and the Midwest, and getting onboard gigs with bands as varied as The Accused,  Book of  Black Earth,  Zeke, Nachtmystium and many more.

Goatsnake – Flower Of Disease

Re-issue of Goatsnake’s long out of print sophomore album. Originally released on the now defunct Man’s Ruin Records in 2000.  Band members included Pete Stahl (Scream, Wool, Earthlings, Desert Sessions), Greg Anderson (Sunn O))), Thorr’s Hammer, Burning Witch, Ascend), Guy Pinhas (Beaver, Obsessed) and Greg Rogers.
The album was recorded in two weeks at Grand Master Studios in Hollywood.  It was engineered and mixed by Nick Raskulinecz  (Danzig, Foo Fighters, Probot, Alice In Chains). The song writing and performance of the band showed an improved and elevated level.  Pete Stahl’s vocals were especially more intense and melodic than on previous recordings.

Disappears – Lux

Lux is the debut studio full length from this Chicago quartet after two singles and a limited live album, all self-released by the band.Drawing on a combined reverence for reverb, heavy tremolo, distortion, delay and repetition, Disappears play minimal rock music inspired by krautrock, punk rock, the mid 80′s New Zealand scene, and a bit of everything in between. And in their minimalist approach the band finds their real strength, hammering home chord structures that are tried and true and can and do remain fresh in the hands of the right talents such as these.  As a wise man once said, “keep it simple stupid”.
